There are so many guitars on the market these days finding one for your child can be confusing. What type do you need to get? What brand is dependable, yet plays easy and sounds good? I have learned quite a lot about guitars in my thirty years of playing experience. I will help you determine which one is right for you with these tips. Forget about any name brands for the moment and consider this. There are basically two types of guitars available. There are acoustic guitars and there are electric guitars and here are the pros and cons of each. Acoustic guitars are acoustic. They do not require any cords, no amp or anything else. You can literally pull it out of the packaging and start strumming it. You do not even need a pick although it is a very good idea. Kids like to pull the strings instead of strum them. They will break and then the guitar will be pointless. Acoustic guitars for kids are also quieter. There is no amplifier. It can only get as loud as they can strum. This can be a blessing in disguise! The acoustic guitar sounds like the winner doesn't it? Here comes the only Con with this type of guitar. They are harder to play. Playing an acoustic guitar takes some getting used to. It takes more to hold the strings down and effectively make them work. If it is too difficult no child is going to want to continue. It has to be fun. That is why I suggest spending as little money as possible in the beginning. Electric guitars solve this problem. They are very easy to play. It is much easier to hold the strings down and strike a note or chord. The down side is the fact that you need a cord and an amplifier. The amplifier part can kill it for some folks. They can be loud but remember you are the parent and there is a volume knob. If it is too loud for you then just have them turn it down a notch or two. Electric guitars will bring out the inner rock star in any kid. From the moment they put the strap over their head and stand there with the guitar in their hands, they transform into miniature rock and roll stars. Their little faces will bunch up and contort as they try to rock out. This alone is worth every single penny. Remember electric guitars are easier and easier means they will stick with it longer. They do require accessories though. An acoustic guitar requires no accessories, can played right out of the box but they are more difficult to play. I will have to cover name brands in another article coming soon! |
